Summary & Highlights
In this episode of WiseTalk, Sue Bethanis hosts Shannon Lucas, co-founder and CEO of Catalyst Constellations and co-author of Move Fast. Break Shit. Burn Out.: The Catalyst’s Guide to Working Well. Shannon has more than 20 years of experience in Fortune 500 innovation. She has held executive roles at Ericsson, Cisco, T-Mobile, and Vodafone, where she built the Innovation Champion program into a global, CEO-backed movement.
Sue and Shannon discuss:
- How Shannon and co-author Tracey Lovejoy define catalysts, and how catalysts differ from innovators and change agents
- Lessons from Vodafone’s Innovation Champion community, where about 30% of champions were self-directed and 70% needed more support
- Why the AI wave feels different from past waves of change, and why leaders should treat resistance as a data point
- VUCA Prime (vision, understanding, clarity, and agility) as a response to a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world
- Listening tours, learning loops, and limiting strategic priorities to seven or fewer
- Building AI skills by applying AI to real work instead of relying on stand-alone training
- Why critical thinking, discernment, and domain expertise still matter when working with AI
- What early-career professionals should develop alongside AI fluency
- The role of expertise and broad participation in AI regulation
- Practical ways for catalysts to set boundaries and avoid burnout
Shannon’s central message is that lasting change depends on both clarity and care. Leaders adopting AI need a defined north star and curiosity about why people resist. They also need the discipline to decide what to accelerate, what to protect, and what to stop, and sometimes that means slowing down to go faster. AI can speed up the work, but it cannot replace human discernment, domain expertise, or the ability to bring people along. For catalysts, making time to recover is part of the work. As Shannon puts it, “a burnt-out catalyst creates no change at all.”
